Chapter 8: The Lilies
The CFO wanted Wednesday, after my last class, in the faculty lot where the Tower's cameras couldn't see.
So on Wednesday morning I went to work.
Lakeshore Community College smelled of turpentine and burned coffee, and room 114 had four easels, two broken radiators and twenty students drawing a pear.
I had taught this section for six years.
I loved it more than any title I had ever inherited.
"Look at where the light stops," I said, walking the rows. "Not where the pear is. Where the pear ends."
A boy in the back row held up his charcoal.
"Ms. Sorrell?" said a girl by the window. "There's a man in the hall with about a hundred lilies."
I looked up.
Darrell was in the doorway.
He wore a pressed navy suit, and his hair was gelled again.
He held an armload of white lilies wrapped in paper so large that he looked like a parade float.
Behind him in the corridor, a security guard hovered with his hand on his radio.
He wore the face of a man who had been told this was a surprise.
"Rhi," Darrell said, smiling the old smile, a little cracked now at the edges. "Can I have two minutes?"
"I'm teaching."
"It's important."
"So is a pear."
A few of the students laughed.
He heard it and his smile twitched, and he walked straight into the room.
Twenty phones came up.
"Everyone, I'm sorry to interrupt."
He turned to face them and put the flowers on my desk.
"My name is Darrell Gaines. I'm Ms. Sorrell's husband. I want to say something I should have said a long time ago."
