Chapter 31: Not My Father

The corridor outside the courtroom was a crush of cameras and reporters.

Troy kept Molly close at his side and Celia a step ahead, clearing the way with her shoulder.

"Mr. Falk! Is it true you bought your wife?"

"Mr. Falk! Do you deny the nursery break-in?"

"No comment," Celia said, over and over. "No comment. Move."

Molly stopped walking.

Troy followed her gaze.

At the end of the corridor, her father was slipping out through a side door with his collar up and his head down.

"Molly," Troy said.

"Wait here."

"Molly..."

"Please."

She crossed the marble in her flat shoes before he could stop her, and he let her go.

He could not stop her without putting a hand on her.

She caught up with her father at the door and said, loudly enough for the whole corridor to turn, "Dad."

He froze.

Cameras swung toward them one after another.

"Honey," her father said. "Not here. Please. Not here."

"Here is where you said it."

"I only told them what happened."

"You told them he bought me." Her voice cracked and held. "You looked at a judge and said I was sold. You were the one who did the selling."

A reporter held up a microphone.

Her father glanced at it, and his face crumpled.

"I was sick, Nelly. I was drowning."

"I know what you were."

"I got clean. I did what he asked."

"You did, and he gave you a bed and a bus ticket and never asked you for a thing." She took a breath that shook. "I was proud of you. I told him so."

"Honey..."

"I have forgiven you two times," Molly said. "I forgave the debt, and I forgave the bruises. I'm out. Don't call me. Don't use my name. Don't come to anything I have, not a funeral, not a birthday, not a hospital."
