Chapter 23: What Remains
The movers came at nine, four men and a truck, and I met them on the porch with a list in my hand.
"Everything in the east bedroom goes," I said. "The wardrobe, the mirror, the emerald dress, every shoe."
"Ma'am, where to?"
"A shelter in Waterbury. I called ahead. They need coats."
Calvin sat on the top step with a paper cup, as he had since the sun came up.
"You're enjoying this," I said.
"I'm supervising," said Calvin. "It's a legal term."
The men went up the stairs I had climbed ten thousand times and came down with Lindy's life in garbage bags.
Sundresses, ringlet pins, a box of coral lipsticks, a stack of my own cashmere sweaters that she had worn thin at the elbows.
I held up the navy ones, one by one, and sniffed them.
They smelled of her perfume, so I put them in the bag too.
At ten I took a pair of bolt cutters to the brass lock on Neal's study.
It was heavier than it looked, and the shackle gave with a bright snap that I enjoyed more than I should.
The room was bare now, stripped by the state's investigators down to the shelves.
