Chapter 8: The Storeroom

Three reporters were waiting at the top of the ballroom steps.

Caleb took my elbow, said, "This way," and walked me through a service door.

It opened onto a narrow storeroom lined with stacked chairs and folded tablecloths, lit by one bare bulb.

He pulled the door shut behind us.

The ballroom noise dropped to a murmur.

"You did that without a script," he said.

"I had a script. It was in my head for six days."

"It worked."

"I know." My heart was still going hard. "I want my answer now, Caleb. Which chapel?"

He leaned against a stack of chairs.

"Linden Hill. I was in the last pew."

I stared at him.

"I was invited as a guest of the groom," he said. "I'd never met you. I sat at the back with my phone out, because Sayre Holdings had been circling two of my suppliers and I wanted to see what Colin Thackeray was like in public."

"You watched them walk down the aisle."

"I recorded it. All of it. When you came through the doors, I was on my feet."

"You were on your feet," I said. "Not in the aisle."

"No."

"You sat there for ten minutes."

"I did not know what she would do until she did it." He held my eyes. "I'm telling you now what I have. A full recording, with the sound. I'll give it to you Sunday, with the other things you need to see."
