Chapter 10: On Their Knees

The letters went out on Monday, and by Monday night I had forty-one missed calls.

I didn't answer one.

My lawyer sat by the window with his phone face down on his knee, and let it buzz itself across the sill.

"The pack forum has crashed twice," he said. "The two who held the phones are at your door."

"Which two?"

"The best man and the maid of honor."

I thought about that for a while.

"Send them in," I said. "Leave the door open."

They came in together, and they looked ten years younger than they had in the freezer.

The maid of honor's mascara was down to her jaw. The best man had a letter in his hand, crumpled into a ball.

"Luna," she said. "We're so sorry."

"I'm not a Luna."

"Willa. We're sorry." She wiped her face. "We didn't know it was real. Odette said it was a game. She said you liked it."

"I knelt on ice for half an hour," I said. "You stood outside the door."

"We were told it wasn't dangerous."

"I asked you to open it." I said it levelly. "Eight times. You filmed me asking."

The best man swallowed. "My father says I'll lose the job at the bank. My mother is in bed. Please. We'll take the videos down, we'll apologize on the forum, anything."

"You already took them down."

"Yes."

"After the letters came."

He didn't say anything.
