Chapter 12: The Grey Coat

My father stood up.

He was fifty-eight, and his hands were shaking, and he buttoned his cardigan wrong.

"I swore an oath twelve years ago," he said. "I swore it to my council, to my daughter and to myself."

"I am breaking it now, in front of all of you, because I am done watching."

Nobody spoke.

"Meadowland has one kind of blood that cures wolfsbane at full strength," he said. "It is the old healer line. It has to be given by a living donor, straight from the vein."

"The law of my pack says that blood never leaves our territory."

"If a healer breaks the law, the one who allowed it loses his seat and his clinic."

He looked at Hester.

"Twelve years ago you called me in the middle of the night. You said your boy was dying and nothing in Westridge's medicine could touch it."

"I remember," Hester said. Her voice had gone very small.

"I drove four hours in the dark. I brought one person with me."

He turned and looked at me.

"I brought my daughter."

Odette's father made a sound.

"Absurd," he said. "Alpha, this is absurd. He's trying to take her credit."

"Sit down," Hester said, without turning her head.

He sat.

"Willa was eighteen," my father said. "She was the only donor in the world who could do it. She lay on the floor beside your son's bed with a line in her arm, and she gave until I made her stop."
