Chapter 17: Only Kellan

Kellan's POV

I kept the crest in my pocket for nine days, and I did not look at it.

On the tenth day I sat down in a stranger's office and put it on the table.

The therapist was a human woman with grey in her hair and no interest in my rank.

"What is that?" she asked.

"The only thing she left me."

"Did she leave it, or did you take it?"

I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.

She waited. She was good at waiting.

"I took it," I said. "I put it in my pocket so nobody else could have it."

"Why?"

"Because if I held it, I could tell myself it wasn't over."

She wrote one line on her pad.

"Kellan, who is the person you were trying to protect?"

"Me."

"Yes," she said. "Start there."

It was not a good hour. She did not let me say I was sorry. She asked me what I had done, in plain verbs, and made me say them.

I said, I pushed her.

I said, I hid her medicine.

I said, I laughed.

I left with my shirt soaked through and my hands shaking, and I sat in the car for twenty minutes.

Then I drove to the east flats.

Nobody in the pack house had ever gone there. It was the old row of tenements behind the rail yard, where the poorest wolves in Westridge lived and where I had never once been to a meeting.

There was a church hall on the corner with a food pantry in it.
