Chapter 19: The Baking Video

I was at the bakery's back door at five the next morning.

Benedict came too. He'd slept on the sofa next to the new kid and had a crease from a cushion down one cheek.

The owner let us in through the kitchen, where the ovens were already roaring.

He looked like he hadn't slept at all.

"I didn't touch it," he said. "I swear to God, Hen. I didn't even open that folder after I made your stick."

"I know you didn't."

"Who would do this?"

"Who's been in your office?"

He thought.

Then his face changed.

"Thursday," he said. "A guy came in at closing. Bought two dozen croissants for the hotel crew. Asked to use the bathroom."

"Where's the bathroom?"

He pointed.

Through the office. Right past the desk with the laptop on it.

"Northcott jacket?"

"Yeah." He sat down hard on a flour sack. "Same guy as last time. I didn't think. Who thinks?"

[it's him. it's the alley guy]

[he went back to clean up. this is so professional it's scary]

[the book NEVER explains how the cops miss all this. now we know. he deletes things]
