Edmund looked at the tart.
Then he looked up at me and laughed, warm and easy, for the cameras.
"Is this part of the show?"
"Everything tonight is part of the show," I said. "You ordered it. Black plum. Dark crust. Signed in blue ink."
"For the guest of honor."
"She's having hers. This one's yours."
At the next table, Maxine picked up her fork and took a big bite of her own tart.
She chewed it slowly, looking straight at him.
"Delicious," she said. "Nobody touched it but me."
A laugh went around the room, nervous and thin.
[oh my god she's EATING it at him]
"I don't eat sugar," Edmund said.
"Since when?"
"Since always."
"You had three of my lemon tarts in March," Maxine said. "I count."
The laugh came back bigger.
Gran sat very straight in her chair at the center front table, both hands on her cane.
"Eat it, Edmund," she said.
He looked at his grandmother. He looked at three hundred faces. He looked at the plate, eight inches from his chest.
I moved it one inch closer.
