Chapter 7: The Trailer
He drove me to the riverfront site in the rain, and I let him.
I told myself it was because I was too tired to argue.
The tower stood in the dark with its steel ribs showing, and the crane arm hung over it.
Declan unlocked the gate with a key he wasn't supposed to have anymore.
"The office trailer," he said. "No cameras. The Draycotts' security company wired the main building in September. They never got to the trailers."
"You've been checking for cameras?"
"Since Tuesday."
We ran across the lot.
The trailer door stuck, and he shouldered it open and held it for me, and we both stood dripping on the cheap carpet while thunder rolled across the river.
Then the lights went out.
"Of course," I said into the dark.
He found a flashlight in the desk drawer where he knew it would be, because it was my desk, and he'd seen me use it a hundred times.
The beam showed paper-strewn drawings and my old chair and a coffee mug with a cartoon duck that I had left on Tuesday.
It sat exactly where I'd left it.
Nobody had moved it.
"Sit," said Declan.
"I'm fine."
"Your stitches are bleeding."
I touched my eyebrow, and my fingers came away pink.
The rain had soaked the bandage loose.
He took the first-aid kit off the wall and knelt beside the chair, because the room had one chair and I was in it.
"Hold the light," he said.
I held it.
He tore open a gauze pad, and his fingers were cold on my forehead as he peeled the old tape away.
I watched his face from eight inches off, in the swaying flashlight beam.
