Chapter 15: Not for Sale

On Friday at noon, Quinton stood in my doorway at work with an envelope.

He had come straight from school, still in his teacher's lanyard.

"Walk with me," he said.

We went down to the lobby, where the coffee cart was, and he held out the envelope.

"Open it."

Inside was a cashier's check for forty-one thousand dollars.

It was made out to me.

"Where did you get this?"

"I borrowed against the house."

"Quinton."

"It's the deadline. Bryce won't pay, his lawyer says it was a gift, and I won't have you wait on a court to get your own money back."

"You borrowed forty-one thousand dollars against your house."

"It's my debt. I took it."

"You didn't know where it came from."

"I should have asked." His jaw worked. "I'm not going to stand here and let you lose seven years of your pay because my brother is a thief."

I looked at the check.

I looked at him.

It would have been so easy to take it.

"I can't take this," I said.

"Sabina."

"Not like this."

"It's your money. It was always yours."

"It's not your job to fix it." My voice rose, and a man at the cart turned around. "Do you know what everyone in my life has done for seven years? They made a decision about me and handed it over."

"That isn't what I'm doing."

"Bryce told me what I wanted. He wrote to your mother as me. Now you've mortgaged your house and brought me the answer tied up in a bow."

"A bow?"

"I am not the thing that gets paid for, Quinton. I'm not a prize your family owes."

His face closed.

"I don't think you're a prize."

"Then why is this the first thing you did two days after we slept together?"

The coffee cart went very quiet.
