Chapter 16: Anneliese's POV

Anneliese's POV

I had been parked behind his car for ten minutes, watching the back of his head through two windshields.

I had told him not to follow me.

I had not said anything about following him.

I got out and walked up to his window, and he rolled it down with his mouth half open.

"I told you," he said. "I told you where I was going."

"I know. That's why I'm here." I opened his back door and sat down behind him. "Drive. And Dominic."

"Yes?"

"When we get there, you walk behind me."

The Pier Forty cannery was a long rust-brown building with its windows boarded up.

Two cars were parked at the side, and light showed under the loading door.

I took the envelope with the divorce papers out of my bag and put it on the dashboard.

Friday ended in an hour, and I hadn't mailed them.

"Annie."

"Later," I said.

I walked to the loading door and pulled it up myself.

The cannery floor was bare concrete with rusted rails running across it.

Fitz sat in his chair at the far end with his wrists tied behind it.

Four men stood around him, dock men in work jackets I half recognized from the hall.

A fifth leaned against a pillar with a pistol held down along his leg.

He was younger than the others, and I had never seen him before.

"Boss," one of the dock men said, and his mouth was dry.

"Untie him."

"We can't, Boss. Mr. Pace said..."

"Mr. Pace isn't here. I am." I kept walking. "I'm Cormac Nolan's daughter. I'll say this once, to every one of you, because I know your names and your mothers. Nobody who works my docks lays a hand on one of my father's own. Not for money, and not for him."
