Chapter 9: Dominic's POV

Dominic's POV

I stood in the doorway of Nolan Hall until the last captain had stood up from his knees.

None of them looked at me when they filed past.

A week ago I would have called that respect. Now I knew it was a verdict.

Anneliese sat in her father's chair with the letter in her lap, and she did not look at me either.

Fitz put his hand on my arm at the door.

"Go and do what you've got to do, son," he said. "She won't want you in this hall tonight."

I went and did the first thing I should have done in March.

The Blue Anchor was closed on Monday.

Gia let me in herself, in jeans and a sweater, with a drink already poured on the bar.

"I knew you'd come," she said.

"It's over."

"Dom."

"It was over the second you put that story up. I should have ended it the night I took the first call from you."

"You told me you were unhappy."

"I was a coward. That's different."

She turned and set the glass down so hard that it cracked.

"She was going to leave you anyway. You told me yourself. She never asks you anything. She never looks at you."

"I never gave her anything to look at."
