Chapter 28: The Reckoning

"Bandages," I said. "Hot water. Blankets for every drake on this field. Then I'll tell you."

The King blinked.

Then he turned to his court and shouted for bandages himself.

I climbed down off the stone.

Wystan was on his knees in the snow.

I knelt in front of him and put my hands on his face.

"You stepped in front of me," he said.

"You were in chains."

"Don't do it again."

"You first."

The Eyrie's healers took him into the hall with four bolts in him.

I went with him and held his hand while they cut them out, and he swore at every one.

By dusk the bolts were out, and the bleeding had stopped.

Bettris came and sat on his other side and didn't let go of him either.

Then the Moot met again, on the longest night, by torchlight, on the trampled snow.

Every drake on the field was wrapped in a blanket.

Wystan stood beside me with his ribs bound and his right arm in a sling.

The King sat in his chair.

The Chancellor still stood at his right.

He had made sure of that.
