After My Husband Abandoned Me, I Rule All Dragons novel · Chapter 29 of 32

Chapter 29: Yes

The whole Moot went quiet again.

Wystan looked up at me from the snow.

"I've known your voice a year and you a season," he said. "I've been chained, shot, branded and starved since I met you. I'd do all of it again on the same road."

Somebody behind the ropes sighed out loud.

"Marry me, Alys."

I looked down at him.

I looked at the eighty drakes in blankets, and the Wing and the clans standing on opposite sides of the trampled snow.

"Ask me in the morning," I said.

The whole city groaned.

Bettris put her face in her hands.

Wystan just grinned, slowly, that first real smile from the Voice Tower.

"I can wait till morning," he said. "I've waited longer for worse."

"I've got one thing to do first."

"I know," he said. "Go on."

In the morning I did it.

I had the Eyrie's great hall cleared of the King's long tables.

Then I had our cook push two of them together in the middle of the floor.

"Again?" he said.

"Again."

The Wing came in from the barracks.

The clans came in from the Moot field.

They stood at the doors and looked at each other.

"Sit down," I said. "Mixed. One of you, then one of them. I'm not moving bowls this time."

The elder's son sat down first.

The cowlick boy sat down beside him.

Then the rest came, slowly, until there wasn't a seat left.

The youngest of the Wing ended up on the end of the bench with the head cook's cat.

The King watched from the doorway with the prince.

"There's no Lord Marshal anymore," I said. "There's no feral king either. There's one Wing, north and south, and it sits at one table."

"Who leads it?" one of the nine asked.

Every face at that table turned to me.

"In a fight, whoever's flying best that day," I said. "In the hall, you argue it out like the shepherds do. And every one of you learns twenty voices before the spring thaw. Grooms, cooks, the woman who sells you eels. Nobody waits for one voice again."
