A year after the Moot, I woke before the bell.
Wystan was asleep on his front, one arm thrown over me, his silvered back to the cold room.
I lay and listened to the Hold wake up.
Our cook, swearing at an oven.
The grey mare, kicking her stall because she wanted her oats.
And under it all, faint, from every corner of the yard, people humming.
It never stopped now.
The children hummed it at the well.
The shepherds hummed it on the high pastures.
Half the Greyspine hummed it without noticing.
The bell rang.
Wystan groaned into the pillow.
"She rings it earlier every year."
"It's the longest night," I said. "We fly at noon."
He rolled over and pulled me down onto his chest.
"Then we've got till noon."
We didn't get till noon.
We got until Bettris kicked the door and told us the whole school was in the yard.
They were.
All of them.
The Voices had come home for midwinter from every corner of Aldmere.
The quarry girl had come up from the sea.
