Chapter 23: The Winter Cup

The winter moon rose over the Standing Stone, huge and white, and the whole pack came to the ring.

Torches burned at every stone.

The silver cup sat on the altar slab in the middle, full of dark wine, exactly where it had stood on the first night.

I looked at it from the edge of the ring, and my hands were steady.

Joss stood among the Thornwood wolves with mud on his boots, grinning at nothing.

He had ridden from the ford at dusk to say that his council had backed down and his seat was safe.

"Wouldn't miss it," he whispered.

The oldest elder raised his arms.

"The seat of Thornwood has been held in trust for a moon," he said. "Tonight the pack says who sits in it."

He took a breath.

"Caleb Rooke asks to stand before you. Who speaks against him?"

A silence fell.

I did not look at Caleb, who was standing alone in the middle of the ring in a plain brown coat.

Then a voice at the back said, "I do."

It was the baker.

He shouldered his way to the front, and his face was red.

"I speak against him," he said. "For what he did to the Beta when he locked her up on a lie. He owes it to her."

"And?" the elder said.

"And he's paid it. He's walked the river in the cold for a moon, and he pulled the ring out of his own cellar wall, and I saw it." The baker rubbed his nose. "I'm not a clever man. I'd vote for him."

A few wolves laughed, startled.

The elder looked around.
