Chapter 15: Bitter Almonds

I knocked the cup out of Rowan's hand before it touched his lip.

It hit the wall and burst.

The housekeeper screamed.

"Don't drink anything from that tray," I told the room. "Nobody touch it."

Rowan looked at the dark stain running down the wallpaper.

Then he looked at me, and his face went hard.

"Bring the bottle to the kitchen," he said to his housekeeper. "Bring the card. Bring everyone."

Five minutes later I stood at the long kitchen table in his shirt, with my hair tied up in a hurry.

The cook was there with flour on her hands.

The housekeeper was there, white as paper.

The driver leaned on the doorframe with his phone out, and two of Rowan's men in dark coats stood at the back door.

Rowan sat at the head of the table with his cane across his knees.

I took a silver needle from my roll and dipped it in what was left in the crystal bottle.

I waited three beats.

I drew it out.

The silver was black to the tip.

"Who brought this?" Rowan asked.

"A man came to the gate at seven," the housekeeper said. "He said it was from Miss Delphine. He said it was a present for you, sir, and it had to be fresh."

"Which man?"

"One of her family's drivers, sir. He had their car."

"And you poured it?"

"She sent a note to pour it into a cup first, so you would not taste it cold."

I looked at the card in my hand.

The ribbon was pink.

The handwriting was round and sweet and sloped to the right.

A car pulled up outside.

I heard the gate open, and the quick tap of small shoes on the gravel.

"They always come to see," I said quietly. "She can't stay away from it."
