Chapter 23: Vows at the Clinic
Faye's POV
"You can come," I told Tobias on the courthouse steps.
He looked up, and his whole face opened.
"You'll carry water," I said. "You'll mop the floor. You'll learn which herbs are which, and you'll take every medicine on time, and when a patient asks who you are you'll say your name and nothing else."
"Yes."
"I'm not forgiving you today."
"I know."
"I'm giving you a bucket."
He laughed and cried at the same time, and I put my hand on the back of his head the way our grandfather used to do with me.
The bank sold the Penhallow house on Monday.
Rowan's lawyer bought it at the lender's price, and put the deed in Tobias's name.
Tobias said he did not want it.
Rowan told him to keep it anyway, and burn what he liked.
On Wednesday, I opened my grandfather's clinic.
The village had come before dawn.
They had repainted the sign by hand, and the yellow was not quite straight.
Someone had hung a wreath on the door.
Someone else had swept the step and planted a row of marigolds along the path.
Forty people stood in the road, in coats and slippers, with their hands in their pockets.
The woman in the green coat was first in line.
Her husband held up his right hand, and it closed all the way into a fist.
"Look at that," he said. "I can hold a hammer."
"You can hold a fork," I said. "Don't start on the hammer."
They laughed.
I put out my arm, and I turned the old brass key in the lock.
The waiting room was exactly as I had left it.
The bench.
The scale.
The glass jar of dried ginger on the shelf.
I put on my grandfather's white coat, which smelled of camphor, and called the first name.
I worked until three.
