Chapter 24: A Saturday in Spring
In March I took him back to Tower Bridge on a dry night.
The lamps were lit, and the river was black and still, and no one was following us.
We stopped at the railing where I had kissed him in the rain.
"You said to ask again," I said. "Once Crispin was finished."
"Crispin pleaded guilty in January," Clement said. "Eleven years.
"Honoria's trial is in June, and Daphne's is in July."
"I'm not asking about them."
He looked at me, with the lamplight on his broken nose.
"Marry me, Clement," I said.
"On a date we choose, in a place we choose, with nobody I don't want there.
"And I'll tell you now that I won't postpone it. Not for rain, not for anything."
He took a long time to answer, and I let him.
"Yes," he said.
His voice shook on it.
"Yes, Thea. On the first date you name."
I named a Saturday in April, and we kept it.
The Elms had a lawn that sloped to a pond, and my father had hired nobody.
He had put out forty chairs himself, and stood about adjusting them.
Clement's mother sat in the front row in a blue coat, and held a small posy, and told the vicar twice that she had known the bridegroom since he was little.
The stout editor sat in the second row beside the brisk solicitor.
Tidy's driver sat at the back in a borrowed suit, with a job in a kitchen at the Grand and a clean licence.
He wept through the vows.
I walked across the grass in a plain ivory dress with no buttons down the back.
