Chapter 9: The Wound

I pulled him down by his wet coat and kissed him.

It wasn't gentle, and I didn't mean it to be.

My mouth landed hard on his, with rain between us and my own teeth catching his lip.

For one second he went completely still.

Then his hands came up and took my face, and he kissed me back, just as hard.

I felt it everywhere.

He turned me against the cold iron railing and his body followed, and I could feel all of him through the soaked wool.

I got my fingers into the short hair at the back of his neck.

He made a low sound in his chest, and it went straight through me.

His thumb dragged along my jaw.

His mouth moved to the corner of mine, then down.

He stopped at the bruise on my collarbone, where the seatbelt had bitten eleven days ago, and he put his lips against it so lightly I nearly came apart.

"Thea," he said, against my skin.

I had my palm flat on his chest.

His heart was hammering.

It was going so fast and hard I could feel it through his shirt, and I thought, he's furious, that's all it is, he's just angry too.

I knew it wasn't, and I told myself it was anyway.

He lifted his head.

His eyes were dark, and his breath was uneven, and his hands were still on my face.

"We shouldn't," he said.

"Why not?"

"Because I'm still on his payroll.
