Chapter 14: The Cell
The Hall cell was a stone box under the salt pool, and it smelled of old brine.
Seawater seeped down one wall and ran into a drain.
A ward-line of iron and silver was set into the bars, and it hummed on Ilsa's teeth.
Two guards threw her in, then dragged the door shut.
A moment later they threw Oren in after her.
He hit the floor on his hands and knees, and she was beside him before he had stopped sliding.
"Oren."
"I am here," he said.
His voice was rough, but his eyes were clear and green.
"I should be a snake in the straw by now."
"I am holding the shape myself."
"For how long?"
"I do not know."
He sat back against the wall and looked at her bare left wrist.
The skin was smooth and unmarked.
"They cut it," Ilsa said.
Her voice came out flatter than she meant.
"The Archmage cut the contract off me like a button off a coat."
"They cut the mark," said Oren.
"They did not cut the rest."
She looked at him.
"Can't you feel it?" he asked.
She could.
She had been feeling it since the guards shut the door.
A low heat was running under her skin, and it was not hers alone.
It was his hunger, and under it, steady and sharp, his want.
