Chapter 21: Last Plea

Ansel's POV

I knew the shape of him at the edge of the lantern light before anyone else did.

A man standing very still, with one arm in a cast and the other hanging empty.

My wolf came up in my chest, hot and quick, and I put my hand flat on it and held it down.

"Let me," I said.

"No," Danica said, beside me at the fire. "Let him come."

"He swung at you."

"He did, and I'm still here."

I looked at her.

I felt the answer through the thread before she gave it, and it was only a steady, tired calm.

I let out my breath.

"I'll be at the flap."

"I know you will."

Carson walked in across the trampled snow with his head down, and stopped three paces from the fire.

He looked ten years older than he had in the ring.

"I won't ask to come in," he said. "I want to say it standing."

"Say it," Danica said.

He stood in front of her and could not seem to start.

I went to the tent flap and put my back to the canvas pole.

I heard everything from there.

I am not proud of how badly I wanted to hear it.

"They won't look at me," Carson said. "My own pack. I walked past my cousin and he turned his face to the wall."

"I saw."

"I don't have a house. Or a seat, or a wolf, or a friend."

"I saw that too."

"Danica, I loved you."

I felt my hands close.

The thread was quiet, and I made myself read it.

She was not angry, and she was not moved.

She was only tired.

"No, you didn't," she said. "You liked how I made things easy. You never asked me one question about my day in eleven months. You never asked what the farm meant to me. You only knew it was sold."
