Chapter 23: The Basin

I put on my boots and my coat and walked out of the tent into a field of kneeling wolves.

The whole Greywater pack was there in the new snow, three hundred of them, on both knees with their heads bare.

The guard with the sling knelt at the front.

Ansel came out behind me and stood a pace off, with his hand on the tent pole.

"Say it," I said to the guard. "Whatever it is."

"We came to ask you to take the seat," the guard said. "Greywater has no Alpha, no Beta and no healer. The Council says you hold more than the seat, and by the old law you may claim it."

"We would follow you," said the young woman beside him. "Every one of us."

I looked at the field.

I saw faces I knew, the cook, the farrier, the girl who used to wave from the porch.

I saw the man who had shouted "Move on, Danica" in the ring.

He was kneeling too, and he could not look at me.

"No," I said.

A murmur went through them.

"I don't want it. I never did. I wouldn't be a good Alpha of Greywater, because my life is north now, and I won't be pulled in two."

I turned to the guard.

"But you'll need one before the week is out. So I'll tell you who I'd choose."

He looked up.

"You told me you felt it, at the gate. I had your arm and you told me the truth, with your Beta shouting at you to hold me."

"Miss Fontana, I guard a gate."

"You carried the slate all night, and now you kneel at the front."
