Chapter 18: Casper

Signe's POV

Casper picked the loading dock behind the hospital where he worked.

It was Tuesday, a little after seven, and he was sitting on a stack of pallets in blue scrubs with his big hands hanging between his knees.

He stood up when he saw Winston.

Then he saw me, and he sat down again.

"I didn't know you'd bring her," he said.

"She's the one who's owed the most," Winston said.

Casper nodded slowly. His red beard looked dull in the sodium light.

"Okay. I'll say it plain." He looked at the ground. "I want out. Of all of it. I can't marry her."

"Why now?" I said.

"Because Melina moved out and didn't tell me. Her sister did." His jaw worked. "Because I called Vera to say I was scared, and she said, You're just nervous, baby, we'll have a baby by next summer and you'll forget it."

Winston and I looked at each other.

"A baby," I said.

"She keeps saying it. Next summer. She says she's ready." He rubbed his face. "I'd been picking out names."

I took out my phone and found the photo Melina had sent me, and I held it out.

I didn't say anything. I wasn't going to be the one to say it.

Casper took the phone in both hands and read it.

He read it again.

He didn't make a sound. He looked at the screen for a long time.

"May fourteenth," he said at last.

"Yes."

"She told me she came off the pill in August." His voice was very calm. "I tracked the months on my fingers in September. I was so happy."
