Chapter 5: Mark's Room
I found Jasper in the barn the next morning, forking hay with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
"Show me Mark's room," I said.
He did not stop forking.
"Rule two."
"I know the rule. I'm breaking it." I stayed in the doorway. "Faye wants one room in your whole house, and she wants it fast. Aren't you curious why?"
"She wants to protect his files."
"From who?"
He drove the fork into the hay and turned around.
"There's nothing in there, Brennick. I've sat on that bed every year on the day he died, and I've read every page. You won't find a thing."
"Then it costs you nothing to let me look."
"It costs me everything." His voice was hoarse. "Not for you. Not ever."
He picked up the fork again, and that was the end of it.
I went back to the woodpile and split logs until my palms opened.
At supper the broad woman from the kitchen set a cup of coffee beside my plate.
There was a brass key under the saucer.
I looked up at her.
She was already walking back to the stove.
"That boy never left a thing unsaid in his life," she said to the pot. "Except once."
She did not turn around, and I put the key in my pocket.
At two in the morning I climbed the back stairs in bare feet.
The door at the end of the second floor was heavier than the others, and the lock turned easily.
The room smelled of cedar and old paper.
Moonlight lay across a narrow bed, a desk, and a shelf of Council law books with their spines cracked.
