Chapter 15: Thane's POV

Thane's POV

The wire ran across the creek at knee height, silver and bright in the first light.

It was strung between two posts on Hoyt's side of the water, and every few feet a hook of it dipped into the current.

Any wolf who crossed it in fur would have lost a leg.

Hoyt cut it with long pliers and leather gloves, one length at a time, and coiled it in a bucket.

"Luther's hunters did this in the night," he said. "While you were in her bed."

"I know where I was."

"I'm not judging you. I'm telling you they walked past my sentries, and my sentries slept."

"Lorna's tea," I said.

He stopped cutting.

"She sent a basket to the camp yesterday, after the child got well."

I looked at the bucket.

"Everyone drank the tea in it."

Hoyt said something that I won't write.

Freya was on the porch behind us with her chair turned toward the water and a blanket on her knees.

She had not spoken to me since we woke.

She had not told me to go, either.

"Where are you going?" she said now.

"To the Moon Hall."

"Luther's council sits at noon. He'll want you there to sign yourself out."

"Then I'll be there."

"You'll be eaten alive."

"Probably." I pulled on my coat. "I'm going anyway."

She looked at me for a long moment, and her eyes were gold in the morning light.

"Don't faint," she said.

It was the kindest thing she had said to me in six weeks.

I drove to the Moon Hall by myself.
