Chapter 15: The Boy Is Eighteen
"I'm eighteen," Kaz said.
Gene's thumb stopped pressing.
"Since October fourteenth," Kaz said. "I have a birth certificate and a state ID. Nobody is my guardian."
"He doesn't understand how the law works," Gene told the reporter, smiling sadly.
"He's confused. I signed for him his whole life."
The microphone swung toward Kaz again.
Then it swung away, because the great doors had opened behind them and Fintan had come out.
He wore his paint-flecked jacket and a face like a closed shutter, and he had never in his life stood in front of a camera.
He stood in front of this one.
"Fintan Moran," he said. "I'm the sexton here."
"Are you Kaz's employer?"
"No. Father Cyril is. We both work for him."
His voice was low and level.
"Kaz has no guardian because he doesn't need one. He has a job he's good at. Anything he does, he chose."
"That's a strange thing to say about a boy," Gene said.
"He's not a boy. He's the best server this parish has had in forty years."
"Dear," said a thin old voice. "May I?"
The oldest of the widows had come down the steps, small and straight in her good wool coat.
Her white hair stood up, and her purse hung on her arm.
She planted herself in front of the camera.
