Chapter 14: Tindle's Terms
The board lounge on the fifty-second floor had a table for twenty and a view of the whole of Central Park.
At ten that morning it held five people and nobody was looking at the view.
Whitaker Kingsbury sat at the head of the table in a navy three-piece suit, with his hands folded on the wood.
He was fifty-seven, tall, gray at the temples, and he had a hard, straight mouth.
He had not hugged his son in eleven years.
Anson Quarles stood by the window with his hands behind his back and his eyes on the carpet.
Jarek stood beside the door in his black suit, at attention.
Vernon Tindle slid a tablet across the polished table.
"Chairman," he said. "I'm afraid this is difficult."
Whitaker looked at the screen.
It showed the elevator photograph, and then the corridor camera of the eighteenth floor, and then a time stamp.
He looked at it for a long time.
"Mr. Quarles," he said. "Your rule."
"No intimate contact, sir," Quarles said, without lifting his eyes. "Without exception."
