Chapter 23: Marlo's
In February, the lunch riot came back to Marlo's.
Averett saw it start through the front window.
First there were a few phones, then a few dozen, then a girl in a red hat pressing her face to the glass.
"Here we go," he said.
"Hold on to me," Jarek said.
They were sitting at a corner table with a basket of bread between them.
Jarek was off duty, in a gray sweater, with his sleeves pushed up over the tattoos and his boots on the rung of the chair.
A man from Quarles's new team stood by the kitchen door, bored and very tall.
"You're not working," Averett said.
"I'm eating soup," Jarek said.
"You're watching the door."
"I'm eating soup and watching the door," Jarek said. "It's a skill."
The restaurant door opened.
The crowd that came in was loud, and it was not the crowd of three months ago.
Nobody grabbed.
A woman in a puffy coat put a box on the table with a nervous smile.
"I made this," she said. "I heard you bake. It's a babka. I hope that's okay."
"It's more than okay," Averett said. "Thank you."
"My daughter has the call sheet on her wall. Not that one, the funny one. Number twenty-three. 'Do not discuss the weather.'"
Averett laughed.
A man came next, with a baby in a sling, and asked if he could shake Jarek's hand.
"What for?" Jarek asked.
"For the steps. My wife watched it nine times."
Jarek turned a color Averett had never seen on him.
Another woman asked for a photograph.
Another asked if the rumors about the pierogi were true.
