Chapter 24: Hi
Dot read the letter out loud, standing on the north cliff in her apron, with a cup of tea in her other hand.
"To the Warden of Notrespass. We are two hundred and eighty people on an island with one well."
"We have a Council. It has met every day since the Lift. It has decided nothing."
"Please send rules. Signed, Everybody."
She turned the page over.
"There's a postscript. 'Do you take applications?'"
Katja sat up in the blanket with her braid in her face and held out her hand for the envelope.
She read it herself, twice, to check.
"We're not going to answer that," said Harvey, who was still lying down. "Breakfast first."
"That's twelve words before noon," said Teddy, from behind a rock where he had been waiting all night with a sock over his camera. "I'm keeping count."
"Teddy."
"I'm sorry. I'm just very invested."
They ate at the fire.
Dot had made oatmeal with real blackberry jam in it.
She put the first bowl in front of Katja and the second in front of Harvey.
Then she stood over them with her ladle until they had both started.
Katja talked.
She told Harvey about the afternoon she counted a hundred and four different birds.
She had sat down on a rock afterward and cried from relief.
She told him how to tell a pine from a spruce in the dark. She told him her sister's phone number, in case.
