Chapter 14: The Order

Jonas's POV

They put me in a plank room behind the barracks with a table, two chairs and no window.

The guards took my flight jacket and my knife.

They left me the hatchet strap, which meant nobody had thought to check.

I sat down and waited for the one man I knew would come.

General Dwight Ames walked in alone, closed the door, and sat across from me with his hands folded on the table.

He looked at me for a long time.

"Seven days," he said.

"Six since the roof," I said.

"Seven since I gave you the order, Mercer."

He was right, and he knew I couldn't argue it.

On Day 22 he had called me into his office and slid one sheet of paper across the desk.

It said: Aldine Tower roof, 1400 tomorrow. Recover Nina Hartwell, ER nurse, alive. Do not tell her. Do not tell Reeve.

I had read it twice and said, "Yes, sir."

I had meant it when I said it.

I had found her on that roof with her husband's fingers around her wrist.

I had flown her away, and I had not flown her here.

"You had her in your cabin," Ames said. "You flew her away from my camp and spent six days on the road with her."

"Yes."

"Reeve's people tell me she hears lies."

"Yes."

He knew I never lied.

He used it against me every chance he got.

"Her blood is the cure," he said. "Reeve told me on Day 20, and he thinks that makes her his."

"I know what her blood is."

"And now you know it's true, what I told you," Ames said calmly. "You've watched her for six days. You've seen what she does when someone lies to her."

I said nothing.

That had always been the other thing I could do instead of lying.

"Reeve says you kidnapped her."

"Reeve is a liar."

"Reeve is a useful liar," Ames said. "I need him to keep selling the serum while I build a proper system around her. A room with a window. Clean linens. A nurse to take her pulse. The best food in the camp. Not a cage, Mercer."
