Chapter 26: The Honest Pilot
Jonas thumbed the radio.
"Black Two," he said. "This is Mercer."
Static hissed, and the helicopter hung forty feet over the stables with its nose turned east.
"Jonas?" a man's voice said. "They told us you were dead."
"Who's in your back seat?"
"The General. Reeve. A cooler." A pause. "And Dr. Bixby, tied up. Nobody told me why."
I looked at Jonas.
His face was calm, and his knuckles were white on the radio.
"Where are the hundred people at the lodge?" he said.
"On the ground, behind us."
"The General ordered them bolted into the cellar so the dead would chew the door while you took off. I stood at the hatch and heard the sergeant's orders myself."
The radio was silent for a long moment.
Then the pilot said, very quietly, "Is that true?"
"Yes."
"Say it again."
"Yes," Jonas said. "You don't know me, and you have no reason to trust me. Land, and go look at the cellar yourself."
The helicopter's nose came around.
It dipped, sank behind the roofline, and the beat of the blades dropped to a long, grinding whine.
"He's landing on the pad," Jonas said.
We ran.
The whole line of survivors came with us, a hundred people sprinting through the gray light with children over their shoulders.
The pad was a square of cracked asphalt behind the stables, ringed with oil drums.
The black helicopter sat in the middle with its rotor winding down.
The pilot climbed out first with both hands in the air.
He was a thin man with a shaved head, and he walked straight to Jonas without looking at the cabin.
"Tell me they're not planning to leave those people," he said.
"They were."
"Jesus," the pilot said, and he stood beside us.
General Ames stepped down from the cabin in his pressed uniform.
He had a pistol on his belt and the face of a man who had never been told no in front of an audience.
