Chapter 13: The Floor Drops Out
His eyes were brown, and they were fixed on my face.
He had told me that, but seeing it was different.
"Hi," I said, and my voice broke.
His lips moved, and nothing came out but air.
In the grey room, the rack of water bottles tipped and crashed to the floor.
"It's going," I said. "Jude, the Space is going."
"I know." His voice came thin and far away inside my head. "It's going slowly, because I'm not all the way up yet. You have maybe twenty minutes."
"I'm not leaving you."
"You're leaving me for an hour. Everything I'm holding will land where you stand, and you can't stand in 412."
I looked at the machines, and at the door.
"Where, then?"
"Basement. When they wheeled me in from the ICU, I remember the ceilings. There's a hall with a yellow stripe, and a door at the end of it. It's full of old beds, and nobody goes in."
"You remember ceilings."
"I've had a lot of time to look at ceilings. Go."
I let go of his hand.
His fingers followed mine for an inch, and then they stopped.
I texted Hank one word, and I ran.
A nurse met me in the doorway with a doctor behind her, and both of them were already looking past me at the monitor.
"Ma'am, he's waking up!" the nurse said. "Don't go anywhere."
"He needs you more than he needs me," I said. "I'll be back."
I took the stairs down four floors with my sling banging against my ribs.
Halfway down, a shelf let go inside my head.
It was the canned beans.
I felt it in my knees. Three hundred cans were suddenly nowhere.
