Chapter 16: Paternity

The result was due at ten o'clock, and Seth drove me to the obstetrician's office at nine-fifteen so I would not sit at Beth's counter watching the clock.

I was nine weeks along.

Three weeks had passed since the anniversary party, and Dylan had done exactly what the lawyer told him to do.

He had signed the test forms on the first page of every copy, in front of a notary, without a word to me.

The truck smelled of coffee and clean cotton.

I had not looked at my phone since breakfast, and I was holding it in my lap.

"You can't make the number change by staring at it," Seth said.

"I know."

"Do you want music?"

"I want the next hour to be over."

He reached for the radio, and the dashboard screen lit up instead.

An incoming call, the name in white letters across the middle.

Dylan.

Seth's hand stopped in the air.

"Rule," he said, and he reached to decline it.

"Wait."

He looked at me.

"Answer it," I said. "He wouldn't call today unless he had a reason."

Seth pressed the button on the wheel, and Dylan's voice filled the cab.

"Hannah? Are you there?"

"I'm here. You're on speaker. Seth's driving."

A long pause.

"The lab emailed me," Dylan said. "They sent it to both of us, I guess. I haven't seen yours."

"What does it say?"
