Chapter 4: The Back Row

"Hannah," Seth said.

He did not step aside.

"You know my name," I said.

"I know you. I've known you five years." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm the one who said you had a wife, last night. Through the door."

"I heard you."

"You heard that?" His shoulders dropped. "Then you heard the rest."

"All of it."

He nodded slowly, and some of the stiffness left his face.

"I've been out here an hour," he said. "I told myself I'd stop him. Then I told myself I'd stop her. Then I couldn't think of a way that didn't make me one more guy in a pew."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I'm not going in there," he said. "And because someone should have called you last night, and I didn't have the nerve."

"You could have."

"I know."

I looked at him, at the tired gray eyes and the jacket he had clearly put on in a hurry.

He was the only one in that room who had said anything.

It was not enough, but it was something.

"What did Dylan say after I left?" I asked.

Seth hesitated.

"Sheridan booked the honeymoon suite for tonight," he said. "A full night, not a quick drive back. Dylan said, 'Who's going to check?' Then he said you'd be asleep by ten, you always are."

A hot, clean anger came up in me.

I had been asleep by ten for four years because that was when the injections made me sick.

"Is the door locked?" I asked.
