Chapter 11: Nothing Before the Stage

Evan Hildebrandt made coffee in his own kitchen, and it took him three tries to find the filters.

"I don't usually have time to be home in the daytime," he said. "Sit. Please."

I sat at the island, across from a cabinet I had picked out in March.

He set a mug in front of me and, without asking, put a sleeve of saltine crackers next to it.

I looked at the crackers.

I looked at him.

"I work in an emergency room," he said. "You've been gripping the counter since you came in, and you haven't touched the coffee. I won't say anything."

"Thank you."

"Eat one."

I ate one.

Then I put my phone on the island, found the voice memo, and said, "Before you decide anything, I want you to hear this."

He listened with his elbows on the counter and his chin on his fists.

When Shelby said, A husband on a piece of paper, his face did not move.

When she said, Evan is a doctor from the hospital board who co-signed my loan, a muscle moved in his jaw.

When she said, he's sixty years old in his head, he reached out and stopped the recording himself.

"I'm thirty-eight," he said.

"I know."

"I'd like that on the record."

"It's on the recording," I said. "It isn't kind."

He nodded slowly.

"Is the rest worse?"

"She's going to let my husband put a ring on her tonight, at the end of the party, in front of everyone. She wants me standing there."
