Chapter 13: Say It Again, Louder
Nobody in the chairs made a sound.
Then the camera operator took one step to the side to get Evan's face, and the whole lawn heard his shoe on the gravel.
Shelby's hand came down from the ring.
She laughed, a small bright laugh, and turned to the donors with her palms open.
"I'm so sorry, everyone. This is my ex-husband. He works nights and he gets confused."
"Ex," Evan said.
"Evan, honey, please. We talked about this."
"Say it again," he said. "Louder. The microphone is right there."
She looked at the microphone in Neil's fist.
Neil had not gotten up from his knee.
"Shel," he said, "you told me you were divorced."
"I am. In every way that matters."
"In what way," Evan said, "is a marriage license from Dane County not one of them?"
A woman in the second row put her hand over her mouth.
Evan took a folded sheet from his jacket and held it up, and the camera found the seal.
"Our anniversary is June third," he said. "Six years. The card that bought your paddle last Saturday has my name on it. So does the house you've been telling people is yours."
Shelby turned and found me at the side of the stage.
Her whole face changed, the warmth sliding off it.
"Beth did this," she said. "Beth put him up to it. She's been unwell, everybody, she's not herself, she's been following us around all week."
Neil stood up slowly.
His knee cracked.
"Bethany," he said. "Is that true?"
I looked at the tech beside me.
He had been told what to do on Friday, by the chair, who had asked me what I needed for a slide show and had not asked why I wanted the sound system.
"Please," I said.
He touched his laptop.
