Chapter 14: Forty-Nine Percent

At ten past six on Monday morning, a truck pulled into June's gravel yard with its headlights on.

I was on the barn steps with a mug of ginger tea, because coffee had stopped being possible.

June stood beside me in her canvas jacket, holding a thermos like a club.

A second truck followed the first.

Then a third.

By half past six there were eleven Holbrook Homeworks trucks lined up along June's fence, and the foreman climbed down from the first one with his clipboard against his chest.

"Morning, Bethany," he said.

"Morning."

"We watched it on the news channel's page last night. The whole thing."

He looked at the men getting out behind him.

"We've talked it over. Eight of us have been with Neil since the first year. We don't work for the man who sold you out in front of a camera."

"You work for the company," I said. "I own forty-nine percent of it. Next Friday's payroll is safe."

"Then we'll work for the forty-nine," the foreman said.

One of the younger carpenters laughed, and then looked embarrassed.

"I mean it," the foreman said. "The trucks are parked here. The keys are in my pocket. Tell us what's next."

I put the mug down on the step.

I had imagined a hundred ways to be thanked, and none of them had involved eleven pickups in a cow pasture.
