Chapter 16: Let People Count
The new studio had tall north windows and a floor that still smelled of sawdust.
On Tuesday morning I stood in the middle of it with a tape measure and a plan for the looms.
The light came in even and white across the boards.
For the first time in a week, nobody wanted anything from me.
The front door chimed.
"Beth?"
I did not turn around.
I knew the footsteps.
She had walked into my dorm room in the same soft flats fifteen years ago.
She had carried a box of donuts and a plan to be my best friend.
"I know you don't want to see me," Shelby said. "I'm not here to fight. I'm alone."
I turned.
She wore no makeup.
Her eyes were swollen, her hair was pulled back in a plain elastic, and the gold band was on her right hand again.
She held a paper cup of tea in each hand.
"Ginger," she said, and held one out. "For the nausea."
"Put it on the floor."
She set the cup on the sawdust and straightened.
"I came to say I'm sorry," she said. Her voice shook exactly where it was supposed to. "I did a terrible thing. I'll say it in front of anybody you want."
"You said a lot of things in front of eighty people."
"I was cornered. Beth, you know how I get when I'm cornered."
"I know exactly how you get."
She took a step closer, and her eyes went to my stomach.
"It's the baby I'm thinking about," she said. "Neil has no idea how to be a father, and Evan won't be around much, and you're going to need someone."
