Chapter 19: Drywall
Evan's POV
On Monday morning I stood in my own living room and watched a work crew take down the walnut wall.
They did it carefully, panel by panel, with moving blankets and no swearing.
The foreman supervised with his clipboard against his chest.
Bethany stood beside me with her arms folded, a pencil in her hair, and a list on her phone.
On Saturday night the detective had walked Neil out of the trade show, past four thousand people who had just watched him come apart live.
By Sunday noon he was out on bail, and by Monday the bank had frozen his line of credit.
Bethany had come straight to my house from the bank's office, and she had not yet said a word about him.
"You don't have to do this," I said. "It's your design. It's also a very good wall."
"It's my wall," she said. "It goes to the studio. You'll get a plain one, in drywall."
"I like drywall."
"You have never in your life looked at a wall."
She was right, and I was looking at her instead.
She had color in her face again after a week of crackers and no sleep.
There was sawdust on her sleeve.
The crew carried the last panel out to the flatbed, and the living room opened up bare and bright and echoing.
For six years I had come home to that room and felt like a guest.
I had assumed it was because I was never in it.
"Here's the thing I keep thinking," I said, and she turned. "Shelby told me, years ago, that she was lonely. I told her I'd cut my shifts. I didn't. When she started leaving, I thought, I earned that. A husband who isn't home has no standing."
"Evan."
"I'm telling you what I thought. I thought I'd left her first."
