Chapter 21: One Dollar

We reached the yard at ten past midnight, with Evan driving.

I had changed out of the gown into jeans in the back seat.

Floodlights were burning over the lumber shed, and a rented box truck sat backed up to the equipment cage with its ramp down.

Neil stood on the ramp with a table saw on a dolly.

Eight carpenters had made a line across the bottom of it, arms folded, boots planted.

None of them had touched him.

None of them had let him by.

"This is my property," Neil was saying, with a high rough note in his voice I had never heard. "I own fifty-one percent of this yard. Get out of my way."

"You own fifty-one percent," the foreman said, without moving. "Mrs. Holbrook owns forty-nine. The saws are company saws."

"I'll take them to my lawyer."

"You don't have one that's talking to you," said the foreman, who read the news.

Neil saw me come through the gate.

His face changed, and he came down the ramp with his hands open.

"Beth. Beth, thank God. Tell them."

"Tell them what?"

"That this is a misunderstanding."

I stopped ten feet from him.

Evan stayed one pace behind my shoulder, not touching me, not speaking.

"You told me once," I said, "that if I kept everything running, you'd always take care of me."
