Chapter 9: Signed
Nobody ate the cake.
Sophie let Evan lead her out of the garden by the elbow, and she did not look back at me once.
The women packed up their bags in silence.
The one in the green cardigan stopped beside me as she left.
"For what it's worth," she said, "I'm on your side. I should have said something at the shower."
"Thank you."
"Come by for tea sometime, with no speeches."
I almost laughed.
Diane stood alone in the middle of her white tablecloths, righting a chair.
She did not speak to me, and I did not speak to her.
I drove home with my hands steady and my stomach in knots.
At nine that night, I heard tires on the gravel.
I thought it was Mark, so I went to the barn door with my phone already in my hand.
It was Evan's small grey hatchback.
He got out alone and stood with the headlights shining on his knees.
"I told Sophie I was getting her ice cream," he said.
"Come in."
He sat on the stool by my bench, next to the cradle, and he held a folded paper in both hands.
"I took this from the drawer in our hall desk this afternoon," he said. "Diane said Sophie signed it, and I've been sick ever since."
He gave it to me.
It was two pages, typed, on a lawyer's letterhead.
The heading said: Family Statement in Support of Evaluation.
Under it, in small paragraphs, a daughter stated that she had observed her mother, Helen Wendt, leave appliances on, repeat herself and fail to appear at family events.
