Chapter 21: Keep Your Word

Isaline went down in Casimir's shirt and her grey gown, with her hair in one long plait over her shoulder.

Sidonie was already in the front hall in her red robe, holding a cup of coffee and peering through the crack of the door.

"Oh, it's beautiful," she whispered. "Come and look. He's ruined his breeches in the slush."

Isaline opened the door.

The street was full.

Market women with their baskets. Clerks on their way to the palace. A chimney sweep.

Two court ladies sat in a carriage that had stopped in the middle of the road on purpose.

News of last night had gone round the city before the bread.

At the bottom of Casimir's three steps, on his knees in the dirty snow, was Lothaire.

He was still in yesterday's white and gold.

His curls had come out. Two of his rings were gone, and the fingers looked naked without them.

"Isaline," he said, and held up both hands to her.

The crowd sighed.

"Your Grace," she said.

"Don't. Don't call me that. Not you."

He shuffled forward on his knees, one step.

"I was a fool. I know I was. I was cruel to you at the feast and I've been sorry every day since."
