Chapter 14: Roses in the Lobby
"Get up," Chiaki said.
"Not until you listen."
"Then I'll listen standing up and you can kneel. Go on."
Somebody near the desk let out a nervous laugh.
A family on the way to breakfast had stopped to watch, and their smallest child was pointing at the roses.
Ryota's face flickered. Then he put the dimple back.
"I was stupid," he said to the lobby. He said it to them, not to her. He had always known where the audience was. "I panicked. Her father pushed me into it. I thought I wanted the promotion, the family, all of it. But the minute I said it on that stage, I knew. It was always you."
A woman by the concierge put her hand to her chest.
"I'm leaving Reina," Ryota said. "Today. Come home, Chii. I changed the lock back. Your key works."
There it was.
The thing he thought would bring her running.
A key to an apartment she had paid half the rent on for three years.
Chiaki walked toward him across the black stone.
She stopped a metre away and looked down at him.
