Chapter 22: Correcting the Record
Reina came down the three steps with the microphone and knelt beside her grandfather's wheelchair.
She held it for him. His hands shook too much.
The old man looked at the folded paper on his blanket for a long time.
Then he looked up at the stage, where his son and his son's new son stood side by side in the light.
"I've read the line at the bottom," the president said.
His voice was thin and dry, and every person in that room leaned toward it.
"Eighty years," he said. "My father pushed a cart through Asakusa in the snow so that we could stand in a room like this. He sold his last coat to buy beans. I never once heard him take credit for a thing he didn't make."
The managing director took a step toward the edge of the stage.
"Father. Let me explain..."
"You'll explain to the board," the president said. "Tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock. I hold fifty-one percent of this company, and I'll be there in this chair."
The managing director stopped where he was.
"You may adopt whomever you like," the president said. "That's a matter for the ward office. But Hanamori doesn't adopt him."
