Chapter 24: Paperwork
Setsuko looked at the folded form in Chiaki's hand for a long moment.
Then she smiled, the wide delighted smile from the lounge in December, and reached into her sleeve.
She took out a second form.
This one was blank.
"I brought both," she said. "I've known you for three months, Chiaki-san."
She put it in Chiaki's hand on top of the other one and tapped the door frame once with her cane.
Then she walked away down the hall toward the elevators.
Behind Chiaki, Kaname had come to the bedroom door with the sheet around his shoulders.
"Was that my grandmother?"
"She brought two."
He closed his eyes.
"Of course she did."
They went to the Minato ward office on the tenth of April, a Friday, because Chiaki chose the day.
It was the first day after the cherry blossoms had finished falling, and the pavements outside were still faintly pink in the cracks.
The ward office had fluorescent lights, numbered tickets and a long counter with pens on chains.
There were seven of them.
Chiaki's mother came in her good coat and her new silver bracelet, and Setsuko in grey with her cane.
