Chapter 17: The Board
The young woman was waiting for me by the loading door of the Allegheny Fertility Center.
Her coat was too thin for November.
It was Wednesday night, and the nurse from my phone call had given her my number.
"I'm the one he paid," she said, before I'd said hello.
She was twenty-three, an office assistant, with bitten nails and a lanyard turned backwards.
"Two thousand a month since August," she said.
"Cash in an envelope, left in a coffee shop. He wanted your file. He wanted the donor form. He wanted to know the day you signed the addendum."
"Why tell me?"
"Because he put your sister's photo on a text. I saw it. She's a kid."
Her voice cracked.
"And because I'm going to lose my job anyway, and I'd rather lose it for something."
She held out her phone.
Five voicemails, all from the same number.
I pressed the first.
"It's me. Friday, same table. I need to know the minute the Hruska woman initials the form for the dead one. Don't write it down. Don't call my office. Burn the envelope."
It was Spencer's voice, soft and pleased with itself.
"Send me that," I said. "All of it."
She nodded and wiped her nose on her sleeve.
