Chapter 23: The Far Radio
They answered the radio at dawn from the co-op office, eleven of us around a table built from two doors.
I sat at the head of it with the handset in my fist.
Conroy stood against the wall, because a captain of the road doesn't sit at council.
That was what he said when I asked him to take a chair.
I knew why he stood there.
From the wall he could see my face, and I could see his.
"Fort Haven," the woman on the radio said. Her voice came through the static thin and clear. "We are a walled city of about nine thousand. We have power from a dam, a working hospital, and a harvest that won't last the winter."
"And what do you want?" I said.
"Fuel. Seed. A road."
"What do you offer?"
"Protection. A place inside our walls for any of your people who want it."
My mouth went flat.
"I have a gate," I said. "People don't need a place inside your walls. They have one."
"Everyone comes to us eventually."
"Then you won't mind a better offer."
The sheriff leaned in and muttered something.
I held up one finger.
"Here's what I want," I said. "Three doctors, for a month, on a rotation. Antibiotics, by the case. A radio relay on your dam road, so we can talk to you whenever we need to."
"That's a lot."
"I'm not done. Our fuel goes to you at fair price, and our seed too. Your trucks come through our bridge gate, same as anyone, and they obey the same rule. You bring what you can. You tell the truth about it."
