Chapter 21: The Pier

The chain on the Odell gate was new and shiny, and the padlock still had the price sticker on it.

Behind it the tugs sat nose to tail along the pier, engines cold, lines doubled.

In front of it stood sixty men in work jackets and boots, and a few women, holding coffees they'd stopped drinking.

The tent from last night was still up at the far end of the pier, sagging, with the string lights unplugged.

I came down the sidewalk with Alistair beside me and Teddy in the stroller.

The captain who'd taught me knots saw us first.

He was sixty if he was a day, with a white beard and forearms.

"Faye."

"I'm sorry," I said. "I came as fast as I could."

"You didn't chain it." He looked past me at Alistair. "He did."

Every man on the dock was looking at Alistair now.

Not friendly.

Alistair didn't flinch.

"I called the loan," he said. "The bank chained the gate. That's what banks do at nine o'clock on a Monday. I'm sorry you heard it from a padlock."

"Sorry doesn't pay my mortgage," someone said from the back.

"No. It doesn't."

A black car pulled up at the curb.

Then another.

Four men and a woman got out, in suits, carrying folders.
